The Eureka Names Database
The database of names on the Library search page contains over 1200 entries, and has been compiled from a variety of sources, including official records, publications, diaries and oral history, by Ballarat Heritage Services (BHS), a company dedicated to promoting local history, particularly that of Ballarat and the surrounding district.

BHS extends a special thank you to Peter Butters for his generosity in allowing us to compare and cross-reference this database with the Peter Butters Eureka Database.

List of terms used in the BHS database to describe association with Eureka:

Ballarat Resident 1854 Residing in Ballarat District in 1854
Direct Association Directly associated, but not necessarily a participant
Eyewitness Witnessed the events, but not necessarily a participant
Government Official Employed by the government
Indirect Association Associated with events, but only indirectly
Military Member of the 12th or 40th regiments
Participant Involved in the battle
Police Member of the police force
Post-Eureka Involved in events after the battle
Pre-Eureka Involved in events before the battle
Present Present at the battle, but not necessarily a participant
Sutler Supplied items of expenditure, such as transport or forage, to the military
Trooper Police

If you believe that an ancestor was at Eureka, or if you have any queries regarding the database, you can contact BHS for research and updating purposes. The compilers welcome any information and comment.
